By Adrian
I decided to buy this lens (second hand) after reading reviews from a series of reviews from the Pentax f.o.r.u.m.s., which rated the lens highly. The lens is all plastic, which accounts for it's DA L status. It's by and large solid in feel, though when fully extended, I found the extended barrel seems to wobble slightly. Otherwise, the zoom and focus rings rotate smoothly, and there is no zoom creep. Despite the size of the zoom, it did not feel especially heavy. In use, all the good things I read about were true. The zoom range is really good. I have used many superzoom P & S cameras, but never had a 450mm (35mm format) lens for a DSLR/SLR, 450mm really allows you to close in on many things you'd never think of taking photos of with a normal 28-110mm type lens, or even the 18-200mm Tamron I used to have. And, being a slr lens, it gives you many features that you look for in a slr lens, such a great bokeh, and very sharp images. Sure, I can't do true macro, but I can do pseudo macro, and because the photos are sharp, you can crop too.I was glad to see the reviews I read about sharpness were not exagerrated. In good light, or even overcast, you really do get very good photos. I am not so serious that I take diagonal measurements to look for parallel errors, or CA, or teeny wenny itsy bitsy amounts of purple fringing. What I was very pleasantly pleased to discover however, was that bokeh was excellent, and I was able to get a thinner area of focus than I expected for such a lens. All in all, I found it to be very useful, and want to couple it with my sigma 30mm f1.4 prime. I look forward to travelling in the near future and trying to use it as my day lens, just to give it a real workout.A good lens at a decent price.Edit 24th August 2011---------------------This lens continues to produce sharp photos with good bokeh. It does hunt sometimes on my KX and also KR. Have not tried it on my new K-5 yet.But have noticed a bit a slight paper thin flaking on plastic mount area. Not much, but if it was metal, there would be zero wear at all (would probably still be shiny). So although I will not sell my DAL 55-300mm (the effort of selling my DAL/then buying new DA and additional money not worth it to me- rather buy other lenses), if you are deciding whether or not to buy the DA-L 55-300mm or DA 55-300, and money is not too much of an issue, go for it and buy the DA version. The metal mount, quick shift focus ability and green ring signifying a better quality Pentax lens are worth it imho. But if you are going for value, or the DA-L is only, say, $100 more when you are buying your camera new from the shop, go for it and get the DAL.Hope I haven't confused too many people!

I'm not a professional but have had some photographic experience. The lens is very versatile and fast, two characteristics I was requiring. In auto-focus, it proves very well, even on moving objects. The picture quality is what makes me give up a star. Though still learning to use both the camera and the lense, it lacks this brilliancy that I would like.

bought the sigma 55-200mm but was a lil unhappy w/ the results. its a good lens but my 18-55mm pentax lens was beating it w/ sharpness n contrast so i returned it. then i saw this 55-300mm. i thought ya why not go further n get more range. turned out to be a very good decision. im a happy camper. w/ some skilled hands you can handheld this @300mm. im able to handheld this even at 300mm no problem. sharp results. just wish a lens hood comes w/ it so its only a 4 stars. take it to the zoo and w/ the right camera settings you can get amazing shots. this lens is for good lighting only. might wanna get a different for those low light situations. GET IT n you wont be disappointed.
