Product Description

This ultra-telephoto zoom lens covers a telephoto range up to 500mm and allows photographers to bring the subject close and short perspective. Sigma's original OS (Optical Stabilizer) function offers the use of shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower. It is ideal for sports, wildlife and landscape photography with handheld shooting. Three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements provide excellent correction for chromatic aberration. This lens is equipped with a rear focus system that minimizes fluctuation of aberration caused by focusing. The super multi-layer lens coating reduces flare and ghosting. High image quality is assured throughout the entire zoom range. This lens incorporates HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor), which ensures a quiet and high-speed AF as well asfull-time manual focusing capability. The addition of the (optional) 1.4x EX DG APO or 2x EX DG APO Tele Converters produce a 210-700mm F7-9 MF ultra-telephoto zoom lens or a 300-1000mm F10-13 MF ultra-telephoto zoom lens respectively. A removable tripod socket (TS-31) is included as a standard component.

5really happy with this Lens
By Matthew J. Baker
I have have had this lens for about a month now and really do enjoy it. It gives me the reach and quality of photos that I need. I use this in with my Sigma 18-200mm and with two lens it covers all the ranges that i need. It can be heavy but you will get used to it pretty quick. I tend to hand hold most all of my shots, a tripod is recommended I do like that it came with a really nice case to carry it. In all this a a good priced lens that will give great photos.

4Good for the price, but ...

I've had this lens since January of 2011. It is the newer HSM OS version for Pentax. Out of the box, the lens had a serious autofocus issue -- every shot over 300mm was too soft to be useable. After fiddling with the lens for a few days to convince myself it wasn't me, I called the Sigma U.S. headquarters in Ronkondoma, NY, which is close to where I live. The guy who answered the phone was Japanese and very responsive (I found out later he was the CEO!). He asked me to bring it in for an inspection. Initially I got a run around from the person who checked it out ("This isn't a pro lense. You can't expect it to be sharp on the long end."), but he relented. They took the lens for repair, and upon my request, gave me a loaner. The repair, which was supposed to take a week, ended up taking nearly a month. As it turned out, the problem was with the firmware for the autofocus mechanism, and technicians in Japan had to write new code. When the lens was returned to me in early February I was told that at that point I was the only person in the U.S. with the corrected firmware for the Pentax version of the lens. Whatever they did worked. The lens functions very well in reasonable light. At the shorter end of the range it is very sharp indeed, but I bought it, as I expect most people do, for the long end. I find that images are soft at 450-500mm. I get very good results at 420mm, f/8, and iso 500 on a K5, handheld. The OS in the lens gives better results than the Pentax in-body stabilization (one of the things I don't like about using the lens is I have to remember to turn shake-reduction off on the K-5 -- sometimes I forget and my shots are compromised). The lens is a very good value for money giving you good reach and good image quality for only about $1,000. The issue for me is that I've subsequently purchased a Pentax DA* 300mm f/4. The Pentax is sharp wide open and fully extended. It is shorter and lighter than the Sigma, so easier to carry around. And it is faster. If the Sigma were sharp at 500mm I would use it more, but the difference in image size between 300mm on the Pentax and 420mm on the Sigma isn't whopping, and the Pentax is sufficiently sharper than the Sigma that the cropped Pentax image is typically a bit better than the uncropped Sigma image. So I find that when I'm going out birding, it is the Pentax rather than the Sigma that I choose. Bottom line. You get good value with the Sigma, but for $200 or so more, the Pentax DA* 300mm might be a better choice.
