Product Description
The ZEISS ZF.2 with F bayonet for digital SLRs. Thanks to its electronic interface (CPU), these new ZEISS lenses support all-important operations such as the automatic exposure for shutter priority, aperture priority and program modes. The CPU also supports manual exposure settings, including those for camera casings that are not AI-compatible. Since the lens now transmits the EXIF data such as manufacturer, date, metering system and exposure settings, photographers no longer need to set the parameters manually. These quicker and faster handling capabilities of the ZF.2 lenses are especially useful under hectic shooting conditions. ZEISS lenses truly come into their own in situations that demand extreme photographic creativity and maximum image quality. Carl Zeiss' fixed focal length lenses are known for their high light sensitivity and precise manual handling, leaving the photographer in full control. The new ZF.2 series will be especially interesting for photo enthusiasts who value creative, high-quality images combined with the comfort of automatic settings.

Some pleasures just keep on giving . . .
By Valerie Scruggs
I've had my Zeiss 21mm 2.8 ZF.2 lens now since December of last year and yet I remain hesitant to pass along any of my findings to the general public at large. Please, don't miss understand me. It's not that this amazing lens has failed to amaze me a million times over since then, in a million different ways. Nor is it a sign that I haven't yet made a full assessment of this finely crafted work of art. The truth of the matter probably lies closer to the fact that I haven't words to describe this wonderful gift of mine just yet. What I will say about this lens is that it is the first lens that I reach for in the morning, and it has become more of a permanent fixture to my D-700. It's the one lens that I grab for from landscape to macro photography and everything in between. It never fails to capture the shot with greater detail, clarity and color than any of my other lenses . . . and I've got a few!!I must admit that I was intimidated, at first, by the idea of a manual focus lens, but I now see where I was dead wrong. Instead of slowing me down and making me miss shots, this lens has brought photography back from an Instamatic sort of world to an art form. Really. Not one word of exaggeration!!This lens has become my only wide angle, and that's saying something for a guy who specializes in landscape work. Believe me when I tell you that this Zeiss will save you money in the long run. I only carry the 21/2.8, a 35/2 and a 100/2 at the moment. All Zeiss, all the time . . . and I couldn't be happier!!!

Anybody who rates this lens less than 5 stars probably doesn't have it!
By John W. Gilbert
I read the 2 star rating on here and just shook my head! My guess is, that the poster is a fanboy of a specific brand (nikon, canon, etc.) and bad mouths other brands, or simply does not have the money for this very expensive piece of glass. I shoot it on my Nikon D700 and the pics. it produces are nothing short of stunning. Manual focus? Yes, of course it is. But it is so buttery smooth and user friendly, virtually all of your still shots will be in focus. There is a focus dot that tells you when your shot is in focus-it is very user friendly! I would guess out of a 100 shots, 95% or better will be tack sharp. It is not an action lens. Don't take this lens on your whale viewing/jumping tour and expect your shots to be in focus......they won't. That is not what it was made for. I've compared it to the Nikon 24mm 1.4G and walked away much preferring the Zeiss so much that I purchased it. However, the Nikon is actually designed for different shots than the Zeiss. I know, I know, people will say the Nikon has autofocus....yeah, it does- but it's nothing to brag about. Leisurely slow at best. You will have far more out of focus shots with a lens like that than you will the Zeiss.Pros: Amazing build quality-if you've never handled a Zeiss..go to your camera shop and see if they have one. You will be very impressed! Focus ring is buttery smooth and user friendly Micro Contrast that is second to none Amazing colors come out of this thing It's not heavy! You just might be weak! Lighter than the 24-70 f2.8 by farCons: It's expensive, but they only make so many each year & you get what you pay for! That's about it. Do yourself a favor. If you are thinking about buying it, rent the thing first throught one of the online lens rental agencies!

Beautiful shots
By Leigh Ann
I rented this lens from LensRentals.com for my Canon D20 (yes - it's old, but it does the job) before a trip to Sweden. What a lovely lens. I did lose a handful of shots (a dozen or so out of several hundred) in very low light due to my inability to focus manually (my camera doesn't allow you to use the LCD to set up shots, and in extremely low light, it's hard to see the focus well through the viewfinder when shooting detailed stuff like an ornately carved altar in a dark church). That said, I got hundreds of lovely scenes - indoors and out - including many long exposures in low light. This lens is spectacular. Color and clarity are stunning. When you nail the focus, the detail is unbelievable. There is definitely some barrel distortion when photographing very large objects (think big buildings, like castles or cathedrals), but the more I used this lens the more I loved it.My only complaint, and it is a minor one, was how fiddly the lens was to mount on the body: the lens is so wide I just had difficulty seeing to line up dots. Minor quibble, but a source of frustration when I was trying to swap lenses while, say, crouching on a street corner or perching on a rock. I also have very small hands (I wear kids' gloves), and had a bit of a hard time getting a good grip on it to mount it. These minor hassles would not deter me from purchasing this lens for a minute. They just meant it was merely excellent - not perfect.I'm an amateur, and it's hard for me to stomach this kind of money for glass, but I'm seriously considering purchasing this lens. It produces lovely results, both wide-angle and macro. It also makes me want a camera with a full-frame sensor, because I just want to cram more and more into every shot.
