5Give it a try if you know to how to shoot manual focus lenses!
By Sergio H. Seipke
I purchased the Rokinon ED500M-EOS 500mm F6.3 Mirror Lens for Canon EOS (White) thru Amazon.com at $162.16. It arrived within 2 days, perfectly packed (as always).Included in the box was the T-mount adaptor for Canon EOS cameras. I presume you could use this lens on a Nikon (or other brand) just by changing the adaptor, but I couldn't say for sure. Lens construction is fine. It feels solid in the hand. Mount fits well in the camera (just as a 'L' lens would, if you figure). Focus ring is smooth and about 1/3 of a full turn.Shooting experience. I shot some 700 frames (mostly hand-held) so far, vast majority were birds, but also deer, squirrels, and people. Light conditions ranged from bright sunlight to subjects backlighted at sunset, cloudy days, and even within boreal forest (early spring, no leafs). I attached the lens to a Canon 40D. Metering works just fine in 'Av' mode (the camera would choose the shutter speed), but overexposes about 1 stop in 'P' mode. Auto ISO works perfectly with this lens too. 'M' mode works as well, of course. I programmed C3, C2, and C1 for different shooting conditions (e.g. C3: Auto ISO, Av, single frame, Mirror lockup, 2-S self-timmer for tripod shots--Live View mode does help, but it is not crucial if you still have 20/20 vision; C2: Auto ISO, Av, 6.4 fps, for bird flight shots and general shooting; C1: ISO 1000, Av, 3.2 fps, for within forest or poor light conditions).Image quality. AMAZING for the price!!! This is the BEST BANG FOR THE BUCK -- NO DOUBT ABOUT THIS. (I owned a Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM, which I shot >50,000 times, and also shot a few hundred pics with a Canon EF 500mm f/4L IS USM, so I have a pretty good sense of what 'high image quality' means in a telephoto lens). I got publishable photographs of birds (gulls, raptors) in flight with this little gem. You need to know your way around post-processing, though (Photoshop highly recommended). Enhancing contrast, saturation, sharpness, reducing noise, and fixing levels are a necessity for each one of the few outstanding photographs you can get out of this lens.Shooting wildlife. It is a delight to walk around with this compact, solid, light-weight little lens. You MUST know what you are doing to take wildlife photographs with this telephoto. If this is you first lens for wildlife you WILL be frustrated. This is NOT a point-and-shoot lens. Don't expect to master it in your first outing. A monopod is highly recomm. but hand-held shots are a realistic possibility as well (ISO 500 and up). You need to learn to focus manually, control your respiration, posture, etc. A shoulder mount could be useful. You will have to shoot MANY photographs, however, especially if you are trying to get flight shots. Expect not-to-nail (publication quality) 4 out of 5 (or even 9 out of 10) subjects.Shooting sports. I did not shoot sports. I never do. But if I managed to nail a Ring-billed Gull flying 30 miles an hour 100ft away on a sunny day, you should be able to take home a few nice shots of your daughter's soccer match. Again, you need to know what you are doing. What to expect. This could easily be the only long lens for 90% of the amateur photographers. Most people only need a super telephoto every now and then. This one does the job. If you only publish online, this might be the right lens for you. DO NOT TAKE THIS LENS AS YOUR PRIMARY SUPER TELEPHOTO TO YOUR ONCE-IN-A-LIFE-TIME TRIP TO KRUGER NATIONAL PARK. You might as well just burn your plane tickets up front. If you are a professional sports or wildlife photographer you probably have not read this far anyway. If you are a non-pro, savvy amateur you can expect to get several decent, and a 1-2 outstanding, shoots every day with this lens. You will NEVER get the same result with this lens as you would with a >$5,000 lens, but you know this already. If you are a bird-watcher this is a fine lens for prairies, grasslands, reed-beds, river-sides, marshes, and other open areas. You can get decent 'for the record' or 'ID' photographs with this lens. You won't be able to shoot this lens in the understory of a tropical forest (heck, even 2.8 lenses have trouble in those conditions anyway!).I hope this review was helpful to you. If you do not own a telephoto, you think you need one, and have a few extra bucks, I suggest you give it a try. You might be surprised!

1Unusable
By RNSchr
The description and specs given for this item would lead any reasonable person to believe this lens should pop right onto a Canon EOS mount. NO SUCH Luck. This item did not include the required T-mount to EOS adaptor. I had no choice but to return the lens for refund.

1Unreasonably Misleading NOT HAPPY
By 1WiseBuyer
I can't tell if the lens is decent quality. I'm still getting over the frustration of paying extra for one made for CANON that does not come with the CANON adapter. If it is not made FOR canon then they should not advertise. How about Works With canon, or Canon compatible, Must Purchase Adapter. Nope.. None of that. Frustrating.Buyer Beware!
