The product was shipped promptly and delivered as promised. I knew going in this was a very economical. It did take some time to figure out how to program the f stop into the camera but after that it does work well. Yes it needs lots of light but so does any lens set at an 6.3 f stop. It actually is fun seeing just what 500m and 100m does!I would highly suggest a monopod or tripod for 1000m but I also knew that prior to purchase.I really is a good value for the price.

It's 500mm. It's cheap. It's small. It's light. There: all its virtues.It's slow. Really slow. Works well enough on a sunny day, though.In addition to being slow, it's exactly 1 f-stop: 6.3. No adjusting that. You can't even stop down to adjust for... I don't know... Shots in the desert at noon. (more on this in a moment).I don't know what depth of field other lenses get at 500mm f-6.3. Nothing's going to be impressive I guess. But the depth of field on this lens is, as someone termed it "paper thin." Couple that with the fact that it's pure manual focus, and you get an idea how tough this is to focus. Add the fact that cameras these days lack the split image focus screens. Add the fact that the slightest twist of the focus ring, which moves smoothly enough, causes big changes in focus. Getting the out of focus picture yet? It's a tough nut. But auto focus it will not.Okay. Now figure in the fact you really need a monopod at least, and a tripod more practically, at 500mm. At least lean on something and get a shutter speed around 1/2000 of a second or better (remember f/6.3 though). So, you've got not too much room to play. Now you're adjusting ISO a lot, trying to get the necessary shutter speed. Crank it up to 3200. After all, a little grain never hurts.Contrast is very low. If you don't post process, you will want to start.But it will allow shots you won't get otherwise. And the focus, though just a little soft, is plausible if YOU got it perfect.Don't let the 2x converter participate in the decision. Not that Vivitar is as good as it once was, but this is decidedly the chinciest piece of substandard off-brand gear ever. Mine broke coming out of the box when the glued on flare mask fell off.Do yourself a favor. Consider your camera brand's bottom end 70-300, and think whether it will do what you need. Nikon's for $130 or so is autofocus, variable aperture (and thus variable depth of field), smaller, sharper, more contrasty, and zooms. If you need more reach, and don't want to spend $4000 (and who does), this just might be fun. If you can live with the many shortcomings.
