good value for the money, but,,,,
By Gus
Mirror lenses have certain intrinsic advantages and limitations and this lens is no exception. These are not the fault of the lens but of the design. For instance, doughnut shaped bokeh is normal for lenses of this type. Check google images for examples. Extreme telephoto means shallow depth of field. No aperture ring means you cannot enhance sharpness or increase depth of field by stopping down. Precise focusing is critical or your pictures will be soft. This lens is very difficult to focus due to short travel of the focusing ring. It is easier to focus using live view and magnification of the screen, if your camera allows it. High power telephoto means you must hold the camera steady or use a tripod or you will get motion blurring. If you already have a lens that covers up to 300mm then cropping to 500mm equivalent gives, for all practical purposes, almost the same results. If you take your time and work within the limitations of the lens then this lens is capable of very good pictures with acceptable to very good sharpness. If you do not have a lens near 300mm or just want to play with the mirror design, then for the money this lens can be a lot of fun. It is short for its focal length and lightweight but bulky, not really a walk-around type of lens. Recommended with the above caveats. Also available with other brand-names but probably identical and made by the same company.

a Definite step up
By 1sttime tree hunter
I wanted to try a new lens because my 75-300 with a 2x teleconverter has way too much chromatic aberration, is hard to focus and has too small of an aperture: f/11.2 at max zoom, this one is f\6.3, way better. This is a definite step up over kit lenses and was well worth the money, it is very bright for the cost and is capable of crisp clear shots, but focusing is not easy and the depth of field is very narrow. My camera has a liveview zoom function to aid in focusing but the stiffness of turning the barrel (no focus ring, the whole barrel turns) causes sever tripod shake- you definitely need a good tripod, which mine is not.A welcome addition to my lenses, I absolutely recommend this lens for people needing long focal lengths on a small budget.FYI not all teleconverters will work with this lens, I have a Digital Concepts 2x with autofocus and it causes my camera to say there is a dirty/defective lens connection which doesn't allow photos to be taken. You actually have to turn the camera off to reset the error. Some website suggested Canons teleconverter, there is enough shake and light loss as it is.
