Great low light pictures and good bokeh!

When taking a picture of my kids using auto scene selector mode inside the house under the same overhead lighting conditions and the same shutter speed (1/50), I went from ISO3200 with the 10mm pancake lens (f/2.8) to ISO800 with this lens (f/1.8). This makes for a much sharper picture, especially when you want to crop and enlarge certain parts of the photo! The background blurring is also very cool and really makes your subject pop out of the photo. I did notice as the other reviewer did that sometimes it hunts for focus much longer than the other lenses, but most of the time it is just as fast. I also noticed that in EXTREME low-light conditions and auto scene mode, the camera will reduce the shutter speed to the point where it is difficult to hand-hold the camera (and impossible to capture kids) without getting blurred pictures (1/4). The resulting picture is actually over-exposed to the point where it is much brighter than the actual level of light in the room. However, if I put the camera in shutter-priority mode and increase the speed to 1/50 and take a picture, the resulting brightness is much closer to what the eye sees.Overall, a very good lens and I would recommend adding it to your collection.NOTE: I am running firmware version 1.2 (latest version) on a Nikon 1 J1.

Awesome lens, a must have for this camera, and at this price its $100 cheaper than any other mirror-less competitors with equivalent focal range.Super fast, I have been pleased to see 1/60 f/1.8 and 400iso in an average incandescent lit room. Same room with the 10mm-30mm kit lens at 10mm gets 1/20 f/3.5 and 800iso. Still not bad, who said this camera had low light issues? With this lens there is no issue. I've seen 1/30 450iso in a dark parking lot just with a few overhead lights. I couldn't be more satisfied unless they added a black hole to start pulling light from outside the frame.The 18.5mm is equivalent to a 50mm on a 35mm camera and is a well loved focal range by many, especially for street photography. It just feels right, not to far away, but not too close. This range is about the same as your own vision, so it frames most "snapshot" situations great and focuses quickly. You have a lot of flexibility in both aperture and shutter speed in average inside light conditions. Great for kids who always seem to move right when you take the shot, bump your shutter speed to 1/250 and bam great exposure and 2000iso, again inside with average incandescent lighting.Nice bokeh, especially the closer you are to the subject (or the more distance behind the subject). I don't argue you would get more from a 35mm APS-C or full frame sized sensor, but if you are reading this you probably don't care and like your N1. Rest assured, the bokeh will give you the smiles and giggles, its very adequate.This fast prime lens, the 10mm-30mm and the 30mm-100mm and you have every situation covered.Check flicker[...], there is a 18.5mm group and some great shots of all kinds of situations.

An absolutely astounding lens especially since I have used several models of Nikon cameras (started with the famous Nikon F) over the years and am VERY familiar with their lenses and the quality of those lenses. This lens works very well in low light situations, situations where flash is prohibited and high action situations like freezing active children. It's also a great portrait lens because of its ability to enable the photographer to control depth of field and its angle of acceptance makes for 'natural' portraits. Could not be happier with this lens !
