Don't let a bad experience with its "little brother" scare you away.
By Trolle Selander
Sometimes going right against reason pays off: after a very bad experience with the super-cheap 500mm mirror lens from Opteka (a 500mm telephoto lens for under $100? How can you go wrong? Well... you can...), I still went and got the slightly more expensive 800mm version. There was some sound reasons why I thought it might be better (considerably wider mirror, leading to over 2x the light gathering area), but quite honestly I never expected THIS big a difference. But the fact is - this crazy little Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope screwed to the front of my camera is AWESOME. Anyone into photography looking for a non-astronomically priced telephoto lens that also weighs next to nothing should get one of these. Just avoid the god-awful 500mm f/8 version. There are a couple of negatives with this type of lens; it is _completely_ manual, and focus can be tricky to get. You also need either a lot of light, or a camera that shoots noise-free at high ISO.

Nice lens for the price
By jay
This lens includes the t-mount adapter (wasn't clear to me in the description when I initially purchased it). I combined this with the Opteka 2x adapter to take the moon shot above. As you'll see in the picture, the manual focus is a bit tricky. A few things which help (Canon 5D MK II):- Stable surface- Tripod (must have)- Remote release or delay- Mirror lock-up- Live previewOverall, for $225 I'm pleased. I wanted to take some pictures of the moon without investing a bunch in a telescope.During the daytime I haven't been able to get a decent shot out of it--the zoom is just too much. My moon picture is uncropped (again, with the 2x adapter). The minimum focusing distance is 11 ft, I believe, which means you could use it for some macro-style pictures as well.

inferior
By Anton Nichta
After attaching the lens to my Canon EOS, I was very dissapointed at the sharpness and contrast of this lens. Fuzzy, fuzzy- like the glass was smeared with jelly! Taking a 160 mm cannon lens and blowing it to the same magnification as this lens, gave me a much sharper image. I know mirror lenses are not that good, but I did not expect it to be this bad. Very dissapointed with this product.
