The solution to this lens is to use manual focus. As per another reviewer, for most autofocus systems to work the aperature must be 6 or greater (that means a number smaller than six). But, a 2x converter adds two f-stops to the aperature (decreases the aperature) so you must have a lens that goes no lower than f/4 for the aperature. Most zoom lenses go to somewhere are 5.3 to even higher numbers and that means that as you zoom in on a subject the autofocus will quit working. The answer is that with a teleconverter expect to use manual focus when using a zoom lens. The lens will work fine.

Big disappointment. I did my research (I thought) prior to purchase as there are compatibility issues with all the body/lens combinations out there. Nowhere on this site, or the other sites I reviewed did it say this product is not compatible with Canon EF-S lenses. Vivitar's website is useless... currently there are no tech specs or FAQ available for this product. However, when I received the teleconverter there was a little note in the box which pointed out the incompatibility. So now I need to deal with a return and hope I'm not charged a big restocking fee.Vivitar's site says "We make it easy!" Don't believe it.

I do lots of outdoor sports/aviation photography and needed "something bigger." I have a Nikon D80 (semi-retired at age 4 years with over 100,000 shutter cycles) with a pair of Tamrons (28-80 and 70-300) and a Nikon D7000 (about 6 months old) with a Tamron 18-270.I used the doubler for the first time in real shooting at the Thomasville airport. I am impressed.The series of pictures with the B-17 coming in and going overhead to landing were taken with the doubler.[...]This picture was taken at 44 mm (actually 22 with the lens and the doubler). It shows that with a wide range lens the doubler can be left on in some situations. Please note that I did not have a tripod or other support and a few of the long shot pics have shakes - I have not had time tocull them out. In addition I had the VCC off on the lens, I did not know how they would interact with the doubler. I was using manual focus for this sequence although I did a few shots with auto and it was a little dicey so I turned it off to prevent losing shots. I am using manual more and more as the camera is more responsive.In all, I am very pleased with the result but like others, if you are not comfortable with the manual focus, this may not be for you or maybe you need to learn the art of manual focus.[...]
