The lens weighs in at 650 grams, is 106 mm long, and focuses as close as 0.31 Meters. That is 1:1 magnification. Of course with a cropped sensor that seems even closer. Inexpensive macro

As of the time of this writing (December 2011), this lens has been discontinued for some time now (don't know when).This is the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 macro. As a macro lens, it produces 1:1 images. The images are amazing in detail. I don't know how the current lenses (100mm f/2.8 USM and the corresponding L version), but this one is pretty good as is.I've also used this lens to shoot portraits and with the right lighting, the resulting images are beautiful as well.The negative points of this lens is that there is no USM motor so autofocus is slow and noisy. I can deal with both of them.Manual focus can be done in fine detail as well. It takes a full 1 2/3 turns lock-to-lock so each turn of the focus barrel moves the elements only a little bit.There is also a LIMIT/FULL switch. FULL allows the lens to focus throughout the range of 1.007 - infinity feet (0.307 - infinity meters). LIMIT allows range of 1.007 - 1.877 feet (0.307 - 0.572 meters).Another note is that the barrel extends and retracts as the focusing ring is turned. This is not a big deal, but when close, you have to make sure you don't hit your subject! On the L lens, the barrel does not move.It takes a 58mm filter.For me, this is a keeper. I don't have any desire (at this time at least) to look into replacing it with either of the newer 100mm macros.I use this with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II and other lenses I own are the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 USM IS, EF 24-70mm f/2.8 USM, EF 50mm f/2.5 compact macro.
