Product Description

Bring your photographic subjects closer with this Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Image Stabilizer Telephoto Zoom Lens. It is designed with Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology and is compact and light. This high zoom ratio lens is equivalent to a focal length of 88-400mm in the 35mm format (when used on Canon EOS cameras compatible with EF-S lenses). The image stabilizer effect is equivalent to a shutter speed about 4 stops faster than the same size lens without Image Stabilizer. In other words, if the slowest shutter speed you could formerly hold a 250mm lens steadily was 1/250th of a second, with Canon's 4-stop stabilization correction, you could hand-hold at shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th of a second. It also uses a UD-glass lens element to correct chromatic aberration for excellent image quality throughout the zoom range. Filter Size - 58mm Max. Diameter - x Length 2.8 in. x 4.3 in./70 x 108mm (maximum lens length) Weight - 13.8 oz./390g Canon 1 year limited warranty

4Good companion to the kit lens
By Gil De Sousa, LensTests-com
Please don't take the Amazon star rating too serious - every lens has its pros and cons that I wouldn't want to squeeze into a single one-dimensional figure...A quick note about me: I have been into SLR cameras and lenses for more than 20 years - as a hobby in the beginning and professionally later. Maybe because of my technical background I started testing my own lenses quite a while ago. I have a (no longer so) little test lab of my own where I do 6 different image quality tests (after taking a lens out for a while). The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II offers a huge zoom range in a compact and lightweight form factor at an affordable price. It is a very popular choice for wildlife and sports photography, portraits and other purposes. It comes with an excellent image stabilizer that offers 4 f-stops gain but lacks a decent USM type autofocus motor which is probably the lens's weakest spot. The micro motor autofocus used is accurate but slow which makes it difficult to use on fast moving targets. Focus motors of this type also don't allow you to override the autofocus manually unless you set the lens to MF mode first. The aperture range of the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II is mediocre and can make early morning or late evening wildlife shots rather difficult but that is to be expected of a lens in this price range. The resolution of the lens is impressive but color fringes occur both in focused parts ("transverse CA") of the image and in out-of-focus parts ("axial CA") and they are easily noticeable. Less noticable but present is the slight curvature of the focal plane ("field curvature"), some barrel and pincushion distortion (depending on focal length) and a bit of corner shadow ("vignetting"). Still the overall image quality of the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II is certainly above what I would expect for the price tag and probably good enough for most purposes. In comparison with its predecessor (the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS) the newer lens is not necessarily an upgrade but neither is it a big step backwards. The image quality is slightly better with the old version but its zoom ring is a little flimsy whereas the newer version's zoom ring is nice and tight. Both lenses make an excellent add-on to your kit if you already own the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II.A much more detailed review of this lens together with all test shots, sample images and technical data is available on my website LensTests_com.

5Not just for taking pictures of distant objects
By Dr. Bojan Tunguz
I had owned Canon Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens (Black) for about a year and I have discovered that the standard lens that it came with was rather limited in terms of what sorts of shots I was able to take, especially when it came to taking pictures of distant object. I was not willing to spend too much money on any of the higher end professional or prosumer lenses. I needed something that would take decent photographs under the normal shooting condition, something comparable to the performance of the standard lens. I also wanted image stabilization, as I had come to appreciate how important it was for making low-blur shots. This Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS II telephoto zoom lens fit that description perfectly, and over the time I've owned iy it has met or exceeded all of my expectations. The lens, as can be expected, shoots good high-zoom pictures, especially in broad daylight. The image stabilization greatly helps in lower light condition as it eliminates a lot of the blur. However, I have not had much success with using this lens at night, even with really long exposure while using a tripod and a remote control. In my experience I got the best result when using this lens for shooting (relatively) nearby objects at high zoom. This would give me a really large contrast and the pictures that I got that way are among some of the best I ever shot. This is also a fairly heavy lens, especially if you are not used to interchangeable lenses, so you need to plan in advance if you are going to use at a particular shooting situation or not. I discovered that it just fits perfectly in my regular sized DSL camera bag. Also, if you are using more than one lens at the shooting session be very careful when exchanging the lenses. I recommend always trying to find a flat surface on which you can lay down any one lens at a time.Whether you are interested in taking close-ups of distant objects or creating some interesting artistic effects, this is a perfect lens to invest into after you've gotten used to taking pictures with SLR cameras.

4Great for the price, decent performance
By J. Jennings
I'm a beginning photographer and now that I've had a chance to use this lens at a few events I wanted to leave a review with my thoughts, particularly comparing it to the EF-S 18-55 IS II (kit lens for the T3i).Pros:- First and foremost, the price. This lens is capable of getting great shots given the right circumstances, and for under $200 it's great.- Nice long zoom compared to the standard kit lens- IS is always niceCons:- Focus issues occasionally in lower light. Sometimes just won't focus, or takes a long time to focus. Haven't noticed this issue at all with the 18-55.- Stiff zoom. Hard to get quick, precise changes in zoom during fast action and during a long event the zooming actually gets a little tiring (18-55 has a much smoother zoom).- Overall noisier than the 18-55, not terrible, but definitely louder.- Photos don't seem as clear as the 18-55. Could be a lot of issues, more camera shake inherent to longer zoom, etc, but the bottom line is that I don't find myself as pleased with the results of this lens as I do with the 18-55.Personal observations:- 55mm just isn't wide enough for what I want to do. I didn't really appreciate this before getting this lens, but I definitely feel limited while using it because I just can't get wide enough shots. Obviously this isn't a problem with the lens, but regardless I'm glad I learned this lesson with a $200 lens before jumping into something more expensive.- I can't explain why but in low-light situations at 55mm f/4 I get less consistent shots than with the kit lens at 55mm f/5.6. Maybe there's some technical explanation for this, I don't know. Conclusion: I love the zoom range, and in good lighting it works quite well. Overall though I just don't feel like I get the same quality shots that I do with the 18-55. If you need an inexpensive zoom and will be using it in well-lit situations, I think you will enjoy this lens. I give it four stars simply because this really is a decent lens minus the things I've mentioned, and there's nothing else close to it in the price range. Sadly we can't all afford the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II zoom... (maybe someday though).
