Even in tricky lighting situations such as dusk, the Makro-Planar T* 2/50 creates distortion-free images thanks to its extraordinary fast aperture. Whether capturing an insect resting on a flower or the moisture on a piece of fruit, these lenses allow a degree of sharpness that was hitherto impossible. Even with a maximum aperture opening and a low focal depth, the desired image can be easily isolated from its surroundings. The macro lens renders objects in close-up on a scale of 1:2. To enable such detail, this lens includes Carl Zeiss's acclaimed "floating elements" design. What you need to know about this lens

This is one of the best lenses available for Canon SLR cameras.I demand a high quality 50mm "normal" lens. Normal lenses spend the most time on my camera, and are useful in practically any situation. I used and ultimately sold several other 50mm lenses before arriving at this Makro-Planar option. Now I have finally found the keeper. Let me explain why:* Excellent contrast and color reproduction* Ability to focus from 10" to infinity means I'm Never bumping up against minimum focal distances* Shooting wider than f/2 isn't, in my opinion, very useful* Focusing manually is very smooth, helped immensely by the focus confirmation, and more appropriate than auto-focus for most situations* 270 degrees of rotation on the focus ring allow very precise, minor adjustments to focus* Results from this lens are repeatedly stunning* The lens is physically small enough that it causes no portability issues. It feels very comfortable carrying around for extended periods of time.* This lens, plain and simple, does not distort or have chromatic aberrations.I cannot speak highly enough of this lens. It has become my workhorse lens, and rarely leaves my camera, and rarely my camera bag. If you are scared by lack of auto-focus, let me reassure that focusing manually, especially on a lens designed to only focus manually, is much easier than you may think. Overall, I give this lens 5 very well earned stars.

I have purchased and used many 50mm lenses, including the Canon 50mm f/1.8 II, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4, this Zeiss 50mm f/2.0 Makro, and most recently the Zeiss 50mm f/1.4. For image quality, this is far and away my favorite of them all, though it's not the easiest to use or most appropriate for all circumstances. The build quality is top-notch and it feels dense and solid in your hands, very classy and traditional. But I'm all about image quality and that is where this lens really shines. It has the best resolution, contrast definition, and sharpness across the entire frame, and the least distortion of any 50mm lens I have used. The colors are very accurate and vibrant, a bit cooler than Canon which is typical of Zeiss lenses.This lens is larger and heavier than any other 50mm lens except for the Canon f/1.2L and the very rare f/1.0. I haven't had the opportunity to try either of those but they serve a very different purpose than this lens, being primarily for portraiture and astrophotgraphy. The Canon f/1.2L is designed to be very sharp in the center but with a soft glow around the edges while this lens is quite sharp all the way into the corners.The focus ring is well dampened and since it has a long focus throw, manual focus is extremely accurate and this makes it a great lens for video follow focus. Purists will say this is not a "true macro" lens as the maximum magnification is 1:2 but I don't necessarily need 1:1 on this since it is not my primary macro lens... nor would I recommend this as your primary macro lens. For your first macro lens I would recommend looking at one of the Canon 100mm macros. (Side Note: If you use this lens with an adapter on a Micro 4/3 camera, it becomes a "100mm equivalent" macro lens. However, you will need to use a trick to pre-set the aperture unless you want to use it wide open.)Canon f/1.4 vs Zeiss f/2 Makro--here are the tradeoffs: Although this is my favorite 50mm lens, it's really for times when you can slow down and take your time framing your subject. At f/2 it is totally usable, and sharper than any other 50mm lens at that aperture. It has the focus confirmation beep but I don't trust the accuracy enough to rely on it exclusively; live view is essential for dead-on accuracy. I usually don't miss not having f/1.4 as I consider f/1.4 to be "emergency use only", however there are times that really call for f/1.4 such as a dark bar or restaurant, so for casual walkabout and candid shots of people in low light the Canon f/1.4 is preferable. The Canon is a fine general purpose "normal" lens with auto focus that allows you to snap away and get lots of in-focus shots with ease. But I have run into the minimum focus distance on the Canon 1.4 and it's really nice that the Zeiss can focus from infinity all the way down to about 9", or only about 4" from the front element of the lens.I have primarily used this lens in my home studio for product photography of smaller items. I hope to get outside in the real world with it more often, because it's a real gem. The Zeiss f/1.4 version is not as good optically--this is more than just a macro version of that lens, it's truly in a class by itself. I guess that's why this one costs $550 more! For the best bang for the buck, stick with the Canon f/1.4--it's a good general-purpose 50mm low light lens and you can't go wrong with it. But if you want the ultimate in precision and clarity, save up for this *masterpiece*.
