You might get a WOW from people that don't know what a mirror lens is.It is not a good 500mm lens and the 2X converter doubles the not too good.Maybe if I had perfect eye sight I might be able to get it focused good enough to get some useful photos. Don't expect sharp images.

Lots of work and lots of fun to learn

I bought this lens after months of reading so many terrible reviews and very few great reviews. The people who gave bad reviews all had the same complaint, it is impossible to get sharp images. The great reviews were mostly from people who claimed to have worked hard at trying to achieve sharp images. I took all those things into consideration and bought it. The first day I had it, I did start to feel a bit nervous about achieving sharp images. Suffice it to say that I had a hard time with the lens. Manual focus has always been difficult for me and this lens was no exception. But, I'm happy to say that I did learn a lot about photography with this lens. I have been slowly but surely achieving sharp images with this lens. The thing I did notice is that, the pictures do not have a lot of contrast under most lighting conditions. This lens is for special purposes and I knew that before I bought it. One of my intentions for this lens was astrophotography. It worked pretty well considering I live in Los Angeles. I posted some pics. Using the 2x barlow does lessen the quality of the shot and increases the softness of the image. But I reiterate, it has special purposes. The doughnut effect on the bokeh (which many people hate) can be used towards your advantage if you learn to work with it. Some tips:1. Use a sturdy tripod2. Use the live view to focus (use the zoom function)3. Practice practice practice4. Focusing through the viewfinder requires strong light5. Can be used hand held with great results in strong light (no need for LV)I hope this review helps you make your decision.

Well worth the price

We picked up this lens for doing wild life shots, figured at the price we paid it was worth the gamble. I use it on a Nikon D5000. You are never going to win if you want to use this as an action/sports lens. Focusing using Live View and then zooming the view in all the way works pretty well. The light meter on the camera does not work with this lens. To get around this we loaded a free light meter app on an iPhone with pretty good success. As long as you are not shooting moving targets, or hoping to get your shots in National Geographic, this lens is a nice addition to your bag.
