By DOBrien
This is a rather interesting lens, definitely out of production by this point but definitely not irrelevant!PROS- Constant F/4 aperture- Wide focal range- Very reasonably priced (used)- Focuses accurately and reasonably quickly- Excellent image qualityNEUTRAL- No Image Stabilization (not a negative, I'll explain later)CONS- As another reviewer mentioned, a little soft wide openFirst, the pros. This lens is fast, focuses accurately and takes great pictures for such a cheap lens. I'm a wedding photographer, and while I stick to L glass for professional gigs, this lens is almost always in my bag when I am out and about. In my opinion the quality and constant aperture this lens offers make it outshine the current 70-300mm, even with all of the technological advances that have been made. I use this lens on both a Full Frame 1Ds Mk II and a 35mm Canon A2E and I am always satisfied. From what I understand, the 70-210mm focal range went out of style at some point in the early 2000's, and this lens was discontinued, I can't imagine why. If you want a constant aperture zoom nowadays, you have to go with L glass which is much more expensive. As I mentioned, I consider the lack of IS neither a pro nor a con. Image Stabilzation has made photographers lazy, either thinking they don't need a tripod or just by shooting more carelessly. When we are talking about print work however, it is almost always obvious when a photographer has used IS instead of a tripod...it is not the cure-all it was made out to be. That said, some people will miss it and I won't fault them on that, I just don't take IS lenses into consideration unless other improvements have been made. Finally I must echo the other reviewer that notice some softness wide open - it's not noticeable unless you are blowing up an image, and since most of our photography is viewed at 1920x1080 or less, you're not really going to notice. For print work, stop down a notch or two and you will be just fine.Overall, I would recommend this lens over the EF 70-300 Canon currently offers, but if you can afford it, go L.

By Timothy Gilbert
I've been using this lens for just under a year. I'm relatively new to hobby photography, and not working with a huge budget, so it's important to me to get the most bang for the buck.I like to shoot photos of singers/performers while running a sound system. This presents three challenges of shooting in low light, from a large distance, and without being able to afford the large L lenses.Although it lacks image stabilization, this lens' constant F4.0 aperture out to 210mm usually provides enough light to compensate for the faster shutter speed required. It's a bit soft at 4.0-5.0 on a 17mpx camera (looking at 100% crop). On a tripod, or with outdoor light, it's even better. In terms for bang for your buck, I think this rivals the canon 50mm f1.8 II. You won't get higher quality for this focal range without spending at least 3x more.

By Mark D. Girouard
As someone new to photography, I didn't want to spend a lot on a lens without knowing if I would use it much. A newer version of this lens does have the imagine stabilization feature at an added cost of around $1000.00. For $100.00 I figured it was safe to buy this one and see if I liked it. I'm not disappointed at all. It takes nice photos, is fairly fast,(f4, considering what a faster lens would cost, this is very nice), and allows me to take photos that I want.I would strongly recommend this lens. Also, the seller was fantastic. The lens arrived earlier than I expected, and it looked brand new!
