It's autofocus mode is compatible with Nikon bodies that have their own AF motor in the camera like the D50 and many others.The important thing is always image quality, and this lens delivers. It has a nice bokeh, crisp sharpness edge to edge and almost no chromatic abberation or geometric distortion. It's only fault is that AF mode will not work on some of the less expensive bodies like the D40 or D3100 that don't have internal AF motors. But because the lens is built solid, the manual focus mode is all mechanical and smooth as silk. Many photographers prefer this, as it's not a drive-by-wire manual focus. There's a distance graph, so you can effectively pre-focus, even in the dark.The macro function is engaged by pressing a button on the lens to allow closer focus at max tele range, making it possible for a postage stamp to fill the screen.This lens has a metal mount, a feature not found in kit lenses these days. It is solidly built by Nikon in Japan, not made in China.
