Less resolving power than telephoto zoom lenses

I bought this lens for what it was intended -a small telescope to mount to my camera (Pentax K-5). What I found from using this lens is that the pictures are soft and lacking fine detail. The lens also makes it necessary to take extraordinary measures to keep the image stable. At 800mm focal length (effectively 1280mm on my camera!) a very heavy duty tripod is an absolute requirement along with extra weight for stabilizing the lens and tripod. Very calm air is also necessary as the light lens with a lot of surface area can be blown around easily. As the focal length suggests, it does bring objects very close. The trouble is, between the lens being dim (f/8.) and extremely difficult to focus and the central obstruction from the secondary mirror, there is very little contrast or sharpness. Details still look soft when the lens is in focus using high magnification in live view. Comparing the Rokinon to an old 80-210mm Tamron lens, I found the Tamron lens at 210mm was able to resolve almost as much detail as the Rokinon. An even older, manual focus 75-300mm Vivitar lens at 300mm was able to resolve at least as much detail as the Rokinon. With that kind of performance there was no reason for me to keep the lens and it was sent back to Amazon. Thank you Amazon for a great return policy!

Great inexpensive lens

This lens provides very high magnification. I am using it with my Pentax K-r and Canon Rebel T3i.This model with the all-black finish costs a little more than the black & white, but in my opinion really looks much better with the DSLRs bodies.The lens has a fixed aperture at f8 and doesn't collect a lot of light. f8 is OK for daytime shooting and I was quite surprised how good the results were even handheld using the Pentax body's shake reduction.For nighttime however, a solid tripod is a must. Don't even think about using it without one.Focus is manual only, and quite tricky for moving objects such as birds. It's not impossible, but don't expect a high success rate. I have never focused manually before, so I'm only getting about 5-10% success rate right now. This is only a $200 - 230 lens. Not an $8,000 - $15,000 lens, which is what you would have to pay to get autofocus for a length of this magnification. Even infinity focus to shoot the moon for example is quite hard to achieve. You need either a good eyepiece, or Liveview with magnification if your camera has it. The lens will focus way past infinity - it is essentially a portable telescope. When you do get good focus however, the image quality is actually excellent.There is no tripod mount on the lens which is unfortunate, as the lens is over 2lbs, much heavier than most cameras. It is "front heavy" when the camera is mounted on the tripod - the whole thing creeps down to the front, making composition adjustments difficult. Even touching the focus ring will move the entire image. When shooting on a tripod, you must use a remote control, either cable release if your camera allows (sadly, my K-r doesn't, but my T3i does), or wireless. Pressing the shutter button while the camera is on the tripod would shake far too much.Due to the lens weight, you need a good T-ring. The one provided by Rokinon is good quality. Some other cheaper ones I have used (Sonia brand), not so much.The pouch is very light and will not protect the lens. While the lens is quite big, it actually fits nicely in my Tamrac Adventure 4 messenger bag.There is a plastic lens cap, but it doesn't snap very easily on the lens.The front filter diameter is 105mm, quite large. Filters in that size are hard to find. The cheapest I could find were $20 for UV and $27 for polarizer on ebay. A high quality UV filter by Sigma in 105mm is $99 as I write this.This doesn't come with a lens hood, and Rokinon doesn't sell one as an option unfortunately. There is a third party lens hood by Polar which has to be ordered from Korea directly and costs about $60. There is a metal lens hood option by Sonia which is only $15.All in all, even though you will need to spend at least $100 more in accessories, this lens is still an excellent value. There is nothing else that comes close to this magnification in this price range.
