Exceeded my low expectations

As long as you understand the limitations of this lens before you buy it, you won't be disapointed. Realize that your getting a ton of reach 800mm, in a very compact form, for not very much money; so understand that image quality is not going to be that great. Also, when reviewing the images I posted, keep in mind this is my first day with this lens.I posted some images, and they're all taken without a Tripod; but if your not using a tripod you will HAVE to be resting this lens against something. Hand holding (even with Steady Stock) is NOT an option. This really isn't as big of a hassle as people make it out to be, but keep in mind you'll still be throwing away a lot of images because of shake (even with Sony Steady Shot on and resting against something). At this reach you have to expect shake is going to be an issue, so I didn't mark down for this.Focusing is hard only in the sense that it's hard to see perfect focus in the view finder. A split viewfinder designed for MF would probably be helpful here. You can tell some of my photos might be a little out of focus and that's only because I couldn't tell with just the plain viewfinder. This is an issue with any MF lens, and I was aware of it going in so I didn't mark down.With any mirror lens bokeh is going to produce "doughnuts". None of my pictures show this very well, so be aware. You should already know about this since your looking at a mirror lens, so I didn't mark down for this either.I rated 4/5 because of the T-mount (which is basically a screw on mount). The kit comes with an adapter, but the teleconverter is T-mount as well. I was hoping to be able to use the teleconverter on other alpha lenses, but that's not possible unless they're T-mount lenses. This isn't a huge thing, but it's a disapointment that wasn't made clear when I bought it.The whole 800mm x2 Teleconverter = 1600mm works okay, but I don't know if I'll need that much reach. You have to remember that the longer the focal length, the more steady the camera needs to be. So I'd rather give up the 2x and a have 800mm that I don't have to steady as much, vs a 1600mm that would be unstable even on a tripod.The Steady-stock is an interesting gizmoe, you won't be able to use it with the Rokinon 800mm because it's not stable enough, but it'll be a interesting gadget to try out when I'm using another lens.Overall, a fun little kit. If your planning to go enter a bunch of photography contests, go spend >$2k super-telephoto lens that's about 3 feet long. IQ is quite poor but that's to be expected, which is why I rated 4/5. If you just want a cheap little lens, that you can actually fit into your bag; to give you some monster reach to have a little fun; this is the lens for you.

Rokinon 800mm f/8 Mirror Lens

I was excited when this lens showed up. I could hardly wait to try it out but it was raining so I had to wait. But of course, I didn't. I have a covered deck so I took my camera and new lens outside under cover and snapped some shots off. And I wasn't disappointed. I knew when I bought this lens the pictures would not be the best and not as clear as my 70-300mm. I did get some good pictures with this lens but it takes some time to get it right.The black nylon case is big enough to hold the lens but not with the extender and the T-mount attached. I like to keep all the parts together in one bag but this bag is a bit too short for that. I do it anyway and tie it up but it may be a bit of an inconvenience for some. Maybe there is another bag available that will fit it. Altogether, the lens is about 8 1/2" long by about 4 1/2" wide with all the attachments on.There are plastic caps that pop on and off the extender which I find to be a pain in the butt. Just because I have a hard time popping them off ...Just so you know ... it's better to put the T-mount on the lens/extender first before you mount it to the camera. It's difficult to screw this lens into the T-mount while it's attached to the camera. I found out the hard way.Using the shoulder stalk is 'different'. That's the best way I can describe it. There's three positions to mount the camera. For me the furthest two are too far away from my face. The closest one is the best but the leading edge rests up against the lens. I have a hand strap that mounts to the bottom of my camera where a tripod would mount and acts like a bracket for a tripod. If I didn't have that, I would not be able to use the last mounting spot because without it, the camera would sit at a bad angle with this lens on. With the 2x extender on it sits fine. I think it would work better with non-mirrored lens and I have yet to try it with my 70-300mm lens.One other thing I have to mention. Check for dirt and dust on the lens often. I took some pictures that I thought would turn out pretty good, only to discover at home when I uploaded the pictures to my computer that there were specks on them. They were quite noticeable. I guess that goes for all lenses but more so for this one. I haven't had that problem with my other lenses yet.A good tripod is a must. I own a cheap tripod that I used with point and shoot digital camera's. It's just too flimsy for a lens this strong. I had to wait for the camera to stop shaking every time I made an adjustment and if there was any wind, it was noticeable in camera shake. Some action I tried to compensate for was shortening up the legs as far as I could and finding shelter from the wind, which isn't always possible.I wouldn't recommend this lens if you plan on doing any serious photography. If you want to just fool around with a cheap lens this could be for you. Until I get better at using this lens, I can expect a lot more bad shots than good. Personally, I plan on using this lens often. At least until I break down and buy one of those three foot long monsters I keep hearing about.
